Nursing Student Shaves Head to Fund Childhood Cancer Research

Christina Cameli won't have her long hair much longer. She's shaving it off to raise money for childhood cancer research as a part of this year's St. Baldrick's Day celebration.

Portland, OR (PRWEB) February 23, 2005 -- Nursing student Christina Cameli is going bald to help conquer childhood cancer. Her head will be shaved as part of this years St. Baldricks day" celebration on April 3rd. The free event takes place at Barracuda restaurant in downtown Portland, Oregon and involves over 40 shavees hoping to raise over $100,000 for childhood cancer research.

The hair-shaving event has become a yearly tradition since the foundation of the St. Baldricks charity five years ago. The non-profit organization raises money primarily to fund CureSearch, a part of the National Childhood Cancer Foundation.

I heard about St. Baldricks last year and stopped cutting my hair," Cameli says. Now it reaches past the middle of her back. She says most people are shocked that she is willing to shave it all off. She encourages turning that shock into a donation for St. Baldricks. Cameli has a personal goal of raising $5000 in donations for the charity; a goal she feels can be easily reached as news of her imminent baldness spreads. Im asking everyone to donate $10 and tell a friend," says Cameli. If we can reach 500 people well meet that goal, and children with cancer will have a better chance."

To encourage even more generous giving, the brave shavee is letting the honor of shaving her head go to the person at the event who has donated the most money to St. Baldricks in her name. For those who can afford to make a larger donation, it adds an element of fun and competition into the fundraising.
