Eyetracking the New Washington Post Homepage -- Heatmap Viewing Data Released on Eyetools Research Weblog

How do people view the new Washington Post homepage launched last week? Eyetools released an eyetracking "heatmap" for the new homepage showing viewing trends on the page. Learn from their design in order to create better webpages.

(PRWEB) February 24, 2005 -- Eyetools released an eyetracking "heatmap" for the new Washington Post homepage, which was launched on February 15, 2005, showing viewing trends on the new page. The heatmap and analysis is available at http://blog.eyetools.net

Eyetools invited 19 people not familiar with the new site design to use the site as their eye-movements were tracked. Study participants' eye-movements, clicks, and comments were then analyzed to quantify trends in what they decided to read and interact with.

"We look for interesting data to share on our research weblog, and the Washington Post's new homepage was a natural fit," said Greg Edwards, Chief Technology Officer of Eyetools. "It's a good showcase for people to learn how design decisions affect reading and interaction."

Eyetools testing is unique because most publicly accessible URLs on the Web can be tested easily. Armed with objective data, companies can instantly see what is working and what isn't and quickly make improvements. In this way, Eyetools removes the guesswork from optimizing websites, emails, landing pages and shopping carts.
