Lies. Deceit. Betrayal. These are a few of the many dynamic themes that can be found in Malynda H.K.'s new book, Discharged from Booty Duty (Outskirts Press, 132 pgs.). The book also deals with the importance of friendship and love along with the dangers of unprotected sex.
One of the central characters in the story is Monica Jones -- a Southern girl who finds herself moving to Washington, D.C., where she plans to give hope and support to inner city families.
However, little does she realize that she also will need to come to the rescue of her two best friends, Trina and Tori -- who are involved in problematic relationships. Their friendship is soon tested when Monica must prevent Tori from committing a terrible act due to a broken heart.
If this were not enough, Monica meets a lover who reveals a shocking, deep-rooted secret that nearly pushes her over the edge. Now Monica and her friends must pull together as they embark on a long, strenuous journey of pain, anguish, and betrayal.
Discharged from Booty Duty stresses "the importance of true friendship and love", comments author Malynda H.K. She adds that the friendship the characters share in the book guide them through their various ordeals and give them "true strength."
Though, not only does the book reflect the importance of true friendship, but also creates an awareness for STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) and the consequences of having unprotected sex. "I was inspired to write this story because I wanted people, especially African Americans, to wise up to the various diseases that affect our communities," says Malynda H.K. She also adds that the book is highly meant to stress "the consequences you pay if you don't take the time to know your partner's (clinical) history." In other words, she warns, "Don't get caught up."
This is also a story that is meant to inspire an awareness for lower income communities, where poverty, drug-use, and disease run extremely high. Adds Malynda H.K., "I wanted to focus on what we as Americans can do to help support lower income communities and get ideas of how to do that through this story."
