The National Association of Fashion & Accessory Designers (NAFAD) was founded by Jeanetta Welch Brown, in collaboration with Mary McLeod Bethune, in 1949. The D.C. Chapter was chartered the same year under the direction of Jeanetta Welch Brown, Freddye S. Henderson, Ada Fisher Jones, and Lois Alexander. An affiliate of the National Council of Negro Women, the organization has sought to open doors for its members, inspire creative and innovative designs, and encourage an independent and entrepreneurial spirit among African American designers to meet the ever-changing challenges of the fashion industry. In addition to the educational scholarships, the D.C. Chapter has been involved in the local community through such activities as sewing caps and producing fashion shows for the American Cancer Society; working with welfare-to-work programs; offering hands-on workshops in sewing, jewelry-making, and other crafts; and producing informational seminars on the business of fashion.
