Policing Las Vegas - A History of Law Enforcement in Southern Nevada. ISBN# 0-929712-23-4

As Las Vegas celebrates its centennial, take a look back at the evolution of law enforcement in the Las Vegas Valley. From cowboys to mobsters, casino cheats to prostitutes and rogue cops, Sin City has seen it all.

(PRWEB) February 27, 2005 -- This book follows the evolution of policing in Las Vegas and Clark County from 1905 to the present. It starts in the beginning, when night watchmen were the law and drunks were taken to jail on horseback, through the days when organized crime controlled many of the casinos and ran the street crimes, and goes on to the acclaimed Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department of today.

You'll learn about many of the colorful characters from both sides of the law. People who were instrumental in the direction that law enforcement took as Sin City grew fom a railroad and mining town to become the entertainment and gambling capital of the world.

There's a section called "The Mob's Man" that takes an in-depth look at the Las Vegas reign of Tony Spilotro, the Chicago Outfit enforcer upon whom Joe Pesci's role in the 1995 movie "Casino" was based.

You'll learn what the Rodney King riots were like in Vegas, when gangbangers conspired to march on Fremont Street to loot and torch the casinos.

There's also the 1979 jail takeover in which three convicted felons took control of the facility located in the City Hall complex. Before the standoff ended, two inmates were dead and one correction officer was wounded.

An officer who was ambushed and shot six times by an illegal alien and survived, tells his story.

The "Recollections" section contains the memories of three cops who were hired by the Las Vegas Police Department in the 1940s. They talk about a Las Vegas that is hard to imagine today.

Policing Las Vegas is loaded with photos, some of which are being made public for the first time.
