WorldWIT Celebrates International Womens Day Around the Globe
Women near you and around the world gather for a month-long series of events to commemorate a nearly one-hundred-year tradition of Dzien Kobiet
Boulder, CO (PRWEB) February 28, 2005 -- WorldWIT, the world's largest online community for professional women, is observing the nearly 100-year-old holiday of International Women's Day in our chapters locally and around the world. The 35,000-women-strong organization recognizes that International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8 during Womens History Month, is the perfect opportunity to gather together and celebrate women's strength and resilience and our desire to gain economic and political parity thru a month-long series of events from Paris to Palo Alto.
International Women's Day (IWD) is the story of ordinary women as makers of history. It is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. IWD dates back to Europe a century ago. Women in United States organized the first national Women's Day in 1908 to help inspire the international event and WorldWIT is making sure that the holiday continues to be recognized annually. Women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, can now come together to celebrate their Day, they may look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.
The day, which has been sponsored by the U.N. since 1975, has been recognized as a time for asserting women's political and social rights, for reviewing the progress that women have made and simply as a day for celebrating women," says Liz Ryan, CEO and founder of WorldWIT. She adds, Today, WorldWIT exists to connect these women around the globe, and the upcoming series of unified events literally brings to life what we achieve via email everyday in the WorldWIT community."
WorldWIT's International Women's Day festivities include such events as a daylong womens leadership conference in Chicago, hosted by the ChicWIT group, entitled Passport 2005; to networking happy hours, a wine tasting, fashion show and breakfast workshops. Other events will be held in cities from Silicon Valley to Paris, France which round out the global WorldWIT International Women's Day month-long series.
