The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 2nd annual induction ceremony on April 8, 2005 at the Sheraton Society Hill. The Hall is dedicated to honoring individuals, teams, events, organizations, and venues prominent in the history of athletics in Philadelphia and the surrounding area. Each year this non-profit organization holds its induction ceremony, which also serves as its major fundraiser. This year’s event will honor 19 Inductees and the 2004 Pride of Philadelphia Award winners. Confirmed attendees from this year’s class of Inductees include: Tommy McDonald, Ed Snider, John Chaney, Jay Sigel, Vic Seixas, Bob Levy, Harvey Pollack and Bill Campbell along with members of the 1954 LaSalle NCAA Men’s Basketball Champions, the first team inducted into the Hall of Fame. Other members of the Induction class include Charles Barkley, Carl Lewis, Cathy Rush, Guy Rodgers, James “Jumbo” Elliott, Pete Pihos, Lefty Grove, Eddie Gottlieb and Grover Cleveland Alexander.

The Hall of Fame’s inaugural Pride of Philadelphia Award winners are Bernard Hopkins, the 2003-2004 St. Joseph’s University Men’s Basketball Team and Team Smarty Jones.

“We are very excited about this year’s event,” said Ken Avallon, President of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. “With so many sports legends in attendance, the ceremony will be even bigger and better than last year,” he continued, “and is a must for any Philadelphia sports fan.”

Also attending from last year’s Charter Class will be Hall of Famers Bob Clarke, Joe Frazier, Chuck Bednarik, Paul Arizin and Sonny Hill.

The ceremony will feature Pat Williams, former 76er General Manager and current Senior VP for the Orlando Magic, as the Master of Ceremonies. The special guest speaker will be Phil Martelli, head basketball coach of the St. Joseph’s Hawks. Sponsors and supporters of the event include The Chapman Auto Group, Sovereign Healthcare, The Philadelphia Sports Congress, and Philadelphia Park.

The event will include a silent auction and cocktail reception beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the induction ceremony. The banquet is open to the public and tickets can be purchased online at http://www.phillyhall.com or by calling (215) 886-6657 Ext. 3.
