Denver, CO (PRWEB) March 2, 2005 -- The Colorado Division of the US Fencing association announced today that it will co-host a North American Cup (NAC) event March 11-14 at the Colorado Convention Center, Hall D. In the spirit of the event, Bart Miller, mayor pro-tem of Centennial has challenged State Senator Jerry Frangas to a friendly duel.
Miller and Frangas were inspired to take to the fencing strip or piste, upon hearing the news that Denver would play host to a national fencing event. Frangas and Miller are both experienced fencers, as are Millers sons. Tournament organizers expect over 800 fencers from the US, Canada, and Mexico to compete at this event, which is free and open to the public.
Miller and Frangas will face off at 1:30pm March 4th, at the new convention center. The duel will be in the Atrium in front of Hall D. The Media is invited to watch. According the Bart Miller, Jerry will be a tough competitor, because he was a college fencer. However, Ive been practicing and I feel up for the challenge. Whatever the outcome, we can both agree that fencing is a terrific sport, and the NAC will be a great event for Denver."
It has been several years since local fencers have had a national event in their own backyard. Denver last played host to an international fencing event in 2000, which attracted hundreds of fencers from around the country. The Colorado Division invites Front Range residents to cheer on local fencers and experience the excitement of the sport. Spectators can expect to see over twenty concurrent bouts during peak hours of the tournament. Fencing moves fast and bouts are scored electronically, so everyone can follow the action," says Colorado Division Chair Mary Wilkerson.
Fencers will compete in three weapons: foil, fencings primary training weapon, epee, the descendant of the dueling sword, and sabre, the modern version of the slashing cavalry sword. There will be mens and womens events open to participants over age 13, and veterans events open to participants over age 40, 50, and 60. Fencing events will be going on from 9am to 6pm daily.
