Like humans, animal parentage can be determined using PCR to analyze DNA. PCR is used to detect short sequence repeats or microsatellites in the DNA. Chromosomal Laboratories utilizes the Stockmarks for Dogs Canine Genotyping Kit to amplify the microsatellite markers as recommended by the American Kennel Club (AKC). This technology can be used to determine the parentage of a puppy from multiple possible sires, artificial insemination, or to ensure the accuracy of breeding done offsite.
