Michael Dowd is a pioneer in the emerging field of eco-theology, a new spirituality uniting ecological responsibility and the evolution of humankind. He believes it can save not just our souls, but the very planet we live on. He will be speaking Thursday, March 17, 7:30pm at the Next Stage in the West Village. Billed as "Beyond Sustainability: A Hopeful, Inspiring Vision of the Next 250 Years" the event is part of the Voices from the Edge speakers series sponsored by What Is Enlightenment? magazine. It is a rare opportunity to engage with Dowd in an intimate setting. The evening will begin with a talk, followed by an audience question/answer period, and a reception attended by Dowd.
Following in the footsteps of the master eco-theologian Thomas Berry and cosmologist Brian Swimme, Dowd is linking spirituality and religion to science, ecology, and evolution-paradigms usually at odds. He believes that understanding the history of our biological, ecological, and spiritual evolution will reveal the perspective of the true nature of Nature. This understanding is the foundation for finding new solutions to our global ecological crises-water scarcity, overpopulation, and global warming.
Dowd is an important "voice" in the evolution of science, Spirit, and ecology. "Michael is talking about something that has the potential to tackle not only the spiritual void that many are facing individually and collectively as a culture," says Mary Adams, Director for the Voices from the Edge series, "but also to respond to the overwhelming ecological quagmire that we are in as citizens of the planet."
In this participatory Voices event, Dowd will explore why this developmental perspective yields a vision where Earth's ecological systems, technological innovation, and social development can actually enhance one another. The results will be more creative, holistic, and sustainable means of production and living.
"Given long-term evolutionary trends, short-term historic trends, and the enormous challenges facing humanity over the next 50 years or so, I'm deeply inspired when I look into the future. The next 250 years will include the most remarkable breakthroughs yet in Earth's 14-billion-year history, and a political/economic vision grounded in evolutionary spirituality will be our guide through the chaos. What an awesome time to be alive!"
--Michael Dowd
"Religion-or spirituality, or whatever you want to call it-has always evolved.... Michael Dowd (is) on the frontier of its current evolution. The energy, commitment, and creativity he brings to his mission would do any old-fashioned evangelist proud."
--Robert Wright, author, Nonzero and The Moral Animal
