Sewing is sweeping the nation as the new pastime for 20- and 30-somethings, attributed mostly to the popularity of ‘lifestyle’ reality home improvement shows. Generation X and Y enjoy the nostalgia of sewing and realize that the possibilities are endless with a little imagination and a few simple sewing instructions.

Sewing has become such a favorite pastime for young adults that designer fabric manufacturers are taking notice and catering designs to fulfill their needs, but most retail fabric stores continue to supply for older target markets leaving younger enthusiasts to hunt fabrics. Leslee Maples, owner of Fashionable Fabrics , a 30-something who is ‘relatively’ new to the hobby, decided she had gone on one too many fabric hunts and decided to open a site offering fabrics specifically for young adults or fashionably ‘hip’ Grandmas. “My biggest challenge,” Leslee says, “was finding fabric that I found inspiring and matched my personality.”

Fashionable Fabrics offers up young, chic designer fashion fabrics from many well-respected designers such as Michael Miller, Alexander Henry and Amy Butler. Here’s a sampling of the sites’ latest design additions:

  •     Amy Butler’s Ginger Bliss line is described by the artist to “evoke the romance of Provence with the excitement of a Mediterranean journey to Majorca.” In addition it is said to “capture today's modern lifestyle with its sophisticated color palette, while honoring a timeless sense of design with flowing graphic forms and textures.”
  •     Michael Miller’s Disco Dots offer a fun, retro style and come in a multitude of colors schemes.
  •     The latest craze in infant bedding is smooth, silky polyester Minky and Minky Dot.
