AIDS Pioneer Launches Supervirus Campaign
Safe Sex Suffragettes" To Premiere at Palm Springs White Party
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) March 23, 2005 -- Twenty-one years after he created Los Angeles Countys first AIDS awareness campaign followed by the first national AIDS memorial, former media pundit turned writer/producer, Tyler St. Mark, has been coaxed out of retirement" to launch a grass-roots campaign to promote supersafe sex" in the face of what some medical experts believe may be a super drug-resistant strain of the AIDS virus.
St. Mark, who conceived and directed the landmark Mother Cares" campaign beginning in 1984, featuring a pint-size, apron-clad maternal spokescharacter chiding her sons at risk" to Play Safely," has announced the debut on March 26-27 of not one but four safe sex spokescharacters at one of the largest annual circuit parties in America.
Any 'supervirus demands super-awareness along with super-safety guidelines," declares St. Mark, who also founded a memorial bracelet two decades ago bearing the names of men, women and children struck down by AIDS.
For this reason, I have recruited an extraordinary group of spokescharacters from the 'Ladies Auxiliary for Cultural Awareness who have become 'Safe Sex Suffragettes, says St. Mark, referring to four specially trained professionals authentically costumed and artistically made up to be transformed into four vintage grannies on an unusual mission.
According to St. Mark, Maude, Pearl, Edna, and Agnes" may appear to be the wackiest grannies in cameos and lace but they have a solemn purpose beneath their gray wigs and face powder-which is to inform people at risk that Supervirus = Supersafety."
LACE will be outreaching one-on-on about this newest deadly HIV/AIDS strain and distributing cameos and condoms while urging party patrons to protect themselves and respect their partners," St. Mark explains. If they manage to inspire even a small percentage of people at risk to protect themselves-weve all done our job."
St. Mark is quick to point out his campaign is privately funded and not affiliated with any AIDS organization. That was the condition upon which I agreed to get involved-Im not interested in AIDS-related politics or scientific agendas," he says, referring to some of the recent controversy surrounding the origin and potential impact of this new resistant virus, which has reportedly appeared in three cities now. Some experts think the threat is overstated, while others believe it may be the start of a super-epidemic.
I saw this happen before," St. Mark says. While experts debated the nature and source of HIV/AIDS," people all over the country were becoming infected and infecting others. Millions of young people at risk today werent even born when AIDS was untreatable and people who were exposed usually died within a few years. They were called 'victims then-not 'patients and I dont want to see that happen all over again."
Accordingly, the new campaigns sponsors as well as those underneath the granny makeup have requested to remain anonymous. We simply want to get the word out that, if you contract a 'supervirus, living with it may not be an option," St. Mark declares.
White Party Next Generation" organizers expect an estimated 15,000 partiers in attendance when the Safe Sex Suffragettes" make their first official appearance Saturday night at the Palm Springs Convention Center riding chair scooters and sporting vintage-style suffragette sashes specially made for the occasion.
Each LACE 'Suffragette has her own hilarious personality and sense of humor," St Mark explains, but dont let that fool you. They are quite serious about saving lives, which means getting out there and standing up for Your Right To Be Responsible!"
