Swiss Absinthe Returns After 90 Year Exile
After being banned for over 90 years, Swiss absinthe has finally returned and is now available to UK consumers exclusively from Liqueurs de France. Although forever associated with Belle Epoque France, absinthe was first distilled in Couvet in the Val-de-Travers region of western Switzerland in 1787. Sadly for connoisseurs, absinthe was banned in Switzerland in 1910 and has been unobtainable for over 90 years, until this year when the Swiss government relaxed their ban.
(PRWEB) March 25, 2005 -- After being banned for over 90 years, Swiss absinthe has finally returned and is now available to UK consumers exclusively from Liqueurs de France.
We are delighted to be the first UK company to offer genuine Swiss absinthe" said Liqueurs de Frances managing director Ian Hutton. Kübler Absinthe is the first Swiss absinthe to become commercially available and our customers are in for a real treat. Such was the reputation of its absinthes that during the 19th century 'Swiss was adopted as an indication of the highest quality regardless of whether the absinthe was produced in Switzerland, France or elsewhere."
The Kübler distillery was founded in 1875 by the great grandfather of the present owner, Yves Kübler. Yves took up the trail of the Green Fairy once more in 1990. Using an old family recipe, Kübler experimented by first distilling and marketing an aniseed, pastis-like aperitif - "La Rincette" (without using the then illegal absinthe plant as an ingredient) and went to work in secret on a genuine absinthe. On 10 October 2001, exactly 91 years and three days after the start of the Swiss prohibition, the first objective was reached: Yves Kübler distilled and sold his first 500 litres of legal Extrait d'Absinthe Kübler". This was greeted with cheers by many and outrage by some, but finally the pressure was too much, and in March of 2005, federal Swiss absinthe laws were repealed, giving Yves the right to make and sell the same thing his great grandfather had helped make famous. Absinthe Kübler" was reborn!
As with all of Liqueurs de Frances absinthes, Kübler is made in an alembic still following original techniques, using only natural plants, rather than extracts or oils. Kübler Absinthe is finished at 53% abv., in accordance with local traditions and will be available in 50 cl and 100 cl bottles.
Liqueurs de France Ltd, based in Esher, Surrey is the UKs leading distributor of premium French and now, Swiss absinthes.
