Attitudes of depressed employees to the involvement of their employers vary dramatically between age groups, according to a recent study. The research, conducted by NCERx, the healthcare division of morefocus inc., is part of a long-term initiative to study the changing attitudes of patients to treatments and medications across 70 disease conditions.

Of the 1,070 patients selected for on-going research and randomized from the initial 15,000 sample, 71%, felt that their employers had an obligation to take an active role in treatment, while only 14% believed that employers had a right to screen for depression. However, when age is considered as a factor, a significantly higher percentage of panelists (38%) in the under 45 years age group felt that employers had a right to screen, while only 55% expected help from their employer.

"It was particularly interesting to note the dichotomy between depressed patients’ views on personal privacy and their opinions on the involvement of employers in staff depression welfare," said Richard Scuderi MD PhD, NCERx Medical Director. "The contrast was most marked in people over 45, clearly demonstrating the changing attitudes to 'lifetime' employment between baby boomers and later generations."

Other findings from the full survey include an analysis of perceived causes, with work and relationship stress heading the list at 61%. A review of attitudes to medication use shows that 79% believe that anti-depressants are over-prescribed. A total of eight quarterly samples will be taken from the randomized depression panel, with the second survey due in June 2005. The results of the on-going study will be published in Q2, 2007, while interim results will be available from NCERx or morefocus as each survey wave is completed.

To complement the 70 disease-specific panels being sampled by NCERx, morefocus, the parent company, is running a series of long-term parallel studies using multiple, micro-segmented groups drawn from the Group’s non-healthcare panels. Together, the results are anticipated to provide an on-going view of the changing impact made by lifestyle choices on health. Further information on the panels, together with summary results of the surveys are available on request from morefocus at http://www.corporate.morefocus.com/.
