Bennett was born in Brooklyn, New York and was raised in nearby Staten Island. He attended Catholic schools, received awards for being an outstanding youth who made many contributions to his community and later attended Rutgers University in New Jersey, majoring in music. Bennett joined the Marine Corps in June 1980 and for the next eleven years he worked in public affairs as a photojournalist, newspaper writer, editor and media coordinator. Bennett received several distinguishing awards for his excellent work as a journalist while serving in the Marines.
