Why in the year 2005 should head lice still turn famlies into "Desperate Housewives"? A Florida non-profit agency has paved the way to give parents back their sanity while helping to keep their children lice free.

Dealing with head lice is never fun, especially when youre on the receiving end of the blame game" stated Katie Shepherd, Executive Director of Lice Solutions Resource Network, Inc.

Lice Solutions, a nonprofit head lice awareness and control center" located in West Palm Beach, Fla., encourages their families to focus on communication and the need to work together. We tell our parents, 'Its not just where you got head lice, but also who you gave it to while you had it. Ms. Shepherd explained. When we can encourage families to quit looking for that patient zero" child and focus on the real problem; we can effectively reduce the overall number of infestations seen in our area."

Her organization, that treats hundreds of individuals a month, promotes the need to take the time to get it all out of the head; as well as the importance of alerting all possible sources of contact. Doing it right the first time is the only way to ensure your child doesnt get it again and again!" added Ms. Shepherd.

So whats the best way to prevent your community from having a Desperate Housewife" meltdown? Better education in head lice issues is the true key towards ending the negative stigma associated with having head lice. If parents could just understand that head lice is a contact issue that happens to everyone, we could in effect eliminate the negative stigma associated with having head lice!" Ms. Shepherd explained.

As the only non--profit treatment facility in the country -- they are making a difference in South Florida. Through programs with Dr. Shirley Gordon of Florida Atlantic Universitys School of Nursing and Palm Beach County School System they are not only helping to end the negative stigma -- theyre reducing absenteeism too.
