Month of the Military Child

Redlands, CA (PRWEB) April 3, 2005 -- Largely unrecognized for decades, the Military Child is beginning to be noticed as "having served too." The Secretary of Defense has designated April as the "Month of the Military Child" and the Senate Armed Services Committee is preparing a resolution to have Congress make the same declaration to recognize and honor the contributions that children in military families make to our country.

This month a group of "retired" Military Brats (an endearing term for those who grew up military) are meeting for 8 days aboard Royal Caribbean's Radiance of the Seas for the "Every Brat Has a Story Inaugural Cruise" sponsored by the Military Brats Registry (www.militarybrat.com). The purpose of the meeting is to begin sharing stories that have long gone unheard. Military Brats have grown up in the shadow of their parent's service, often enduring hardships but also witnessing first hand most of history as it happened, where it happened.

Imagine being 10 years old living in Honolulu on December 7, 1941...the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. Or how about living in Berlin, Germany when the wall went up, or as a high school student actually attending the Nuremberg trials. These are just some of the events that Military Brats have experienced and will have the opportunity to discuss at this event, and at locations all over the United States in the future. And for the first time in many years, Mary Edwards Wertsch will be speaking about the research that led to her groundbreaking book, "Military Brats: Legacies of Childhood Inside the Fortress." Additionally, there will be a display by "Operation Footlocker"...the Mobile Military Brat Monument. Donna Musil will present a test preview of the soon to be released documentary, "Military Brats: Our Journey Home".

The "Every Brat Has a Story" concept was created by Marc Curtis, creator of the Military Brats Registry. According to Marc, "It's time to let Military Brats share their stories in an atmosphere where they aren't concerned about being believed or that they are bragging because others in the group have also 'been there, done that'! These events are designed to allow a free flow of discussion among people who grew up in a very unusual culture."
