Verizon and Super Handyman Al Carrell offer house painting tips and techniques in the third of six do-it-yourself home improvement project guides available on Verizon, the premier online shopping site. For example, Carrell says paint brush and paint roller selection are important decisions to make before painting the exterior or interior of your house.

“Brushing takes more work, rollers cover smoothly and sprayers are easiest but often requiring cleaning or tinkering with the sprayer during the job,” Carrell says. “I like to use a roller, with brushes only for spots, like corners, a roller can’t do.”

When choosing a color to paint your house, Carrell reminds that light colors make surfaces look larger while dark colors make them look smaller. You can use paint card samples from your local paint or hardware store, but a better method is to buy a small can of the color and see how it actually looks on the wall.

Carrell, a nationally known expert on home improvement and repair including house painting, served for eight years as spokesman for The Home Depot. He advises homeowners to get the best available quality of paint so the new surface looks better and lasts longer.
