Matterform Streamlines Spam Fighting with Spamfire 2.0

Matterform has announced Spamfire 2.0 for Macintosh computers and any email program. Self-training filters, higher accuracy, easier browsing, and additional Revenge options round out the new features.

Espaņola, NM (PRWEB) April 12, 2005 -- Matterform Media (http://www.matterform.com), a leading provider of anti-spam protection for Macintosh computer users, today announced the immediate availability of Spamfire version 2.0, a freshly re-designed and more powerful version of its popular spam fighting software.

Spamfire 2.0 introduces new self-training filtering technology to achieve unprecedented filtering accuracy. The new version accurately blocks virtually all incoming spam for most email accounts, through its unique combination of block lists, heuristics and statistical analysis. In addition, users can easily train Spamfire 2.0 manually and the software can automatically "learn" to recognize new spam messages by combining results from multiple filter types.

In addition to high accuracy, Spamfire 2.0 makes it easier to manage large spam loads, a "must-have" in todays business environment; industry analyst IDC estimates that more than 20 billion spam messages will be sent every day by the end of this year. "High accuracy is a must, but it actually intensifies the needle-and-haystack problem," said Michael Herrick, president of Matterform Media and lead developer of Spamfire 2.0. "Users still need to be able to supervise their spam filter, but if you have to read 2,000 spam subjects to find a single mis-filed message, it really defeats the purpose of a spam filter."

Unlike other spam solutions, including filters built in to most email programs, Spamfire separates spam into three different mailboxes, Borderline, Probable and Definite. After a few days of training, most spam will appear in the Definite spam mailbox. Usually, the user only needs to review a few messages in the Borderline or Probable mailboxes.

"My business receives 1,200 emails every day, most of it spam," said Don Morris, owner of OfficeMedic and a Spamfire user since 2002. "I don't even look at 95% of those spams, because when Spamfire says it's certain, I know I can trust it. The few messages I have had to correct showed up in my Borderline mailbox, where they were very easy to find and fix."

Version 2.0 also builds on Spamfire's unique "Revenge" features for fighting back at spammers. The new version includes built-in support for SpamX, a spam reporting utility from Hendrickson Software Components (http://www.hendricom.com). Users can configure Spamfire to intercept spam and automatically hand the spam off to SpamX, which then reports the spam to ISPs for disciplinary action.

"Spamfire and SpamX provide an automated one-two punch for fighting spam," said Jeff Hendrickson of Hendrickson Software Components. "Spammers realize that it's pointless to send spam to people who use automated spam fighting tools, so the Spamfire/SpamX combination can actually reduce future spam."

Other Revenge features let Spamfire users report spam to government agencies and Matterform's own SpamCrime spam tracking database (http://www.spamcrime.com). To avoid incorrect reports, Spamfire only reports messages that have been positively identified as spam. "Probable" and "Borderline" spam messages can be processed by hand.

Spamfire 2.0 is available for computers running Macintosh OS X, and works with any POP or IMAP email account. Spamfire 2.0 offers improved mail client integration and can automatically configure itself for most popular email programs, including OS X Mail, Entourage, Eudora, Powermail, Mozilla and Mailsmith.

Spamfire can be purchased from the company's Web site and from computer resellers such as Fry's Electronics. Spamfire's retail price is $39.95 and includes 12 months of filter updates. A 12-month filter update renewal costs $12.95. Special upgrade prices are available for owners of Spamfire 1.6. A free 15-day demo is available on the Web site.
