Every family has one or knows one: the passionate pepper lover. The truly passionate have found their guru and so have wood lovers. Both appear when Pepper-Passion owner, D. B. (Bruce) Morgan, opens his booth at local art shows and sets out his hand crafted Peppermills and gourmet peppercorns. If he isn't talking about exotic woods or turning technique, he's talking pepper.
Four years ago Mr. Morgan lost his job in export sales. As time passed, he was forced to Âthink outside the boxÂ, so in the summer of 2003 he decided to combine two interests, pepper and woodworking to create a new business called Pepper-Passion. It started with a single product the elegant ÂAphrodite Pepper Mill design but has since expanded to six unique Salt & Pepper Mill designs, plus a broad selection of gourmet peppercorns and sea salts. Concurrently he was putting his computer and marketing skills to work to design a web site (http://www.pepper-passion.com) to market his products. He also signed up for food and art shows around the Puget Sound area and was astounded at the response. In only its second year Pepper-Passion continues to grow and has been featured in publications including The Puget Sound Business Journal, Northwest Home & Garden and the ÂInside Seattle section of Sunset Magazine.
One key to Pepper-Passion's success is the elevation of a practical kitchen "must" into a piece of functional artwork. The marriage of the most widely used spice in the world with a hand crafted Mill made from stunning exotic woods makes an irresistible combination to buyers. Top grade peppercorns offered together with showcase quality mills makes for a synergistic combination.
The peppercorns and woods come from tropical areas all over the world. Visitors to the web site or show booth learn about countries where the exotic woods and peppercorns are sourced, the different peppercorn varieties and the subtleties of flavors. The selection includes rare premium grades such as the organically grown "Talamanca del Caribe," from Ecuador, which is immensely popular for those who love a high, robust "note" in their pepper on, say, steaks or Caesar Salads. Discussions around the booth range quickly from peppercorn colors, to why some varieties are hard to come by, then to why a cook would want to use a certain variety for authenticity in cooking.
"The pepper mills" Mr. Morgan explains, "are all original designs made from a single piece of hardwood. Each design is created to provide superior ergonomics in an aesthetic shape, while highlighting the natural beauty of the wood. A buyer can custom order the design they prefer in a wood that has caught their eye, or pick from a piece off the shelf ready to use. The piece becomes a useful heirloom and functional piece of art."
The Pepper Mills are in good company now that Salt Mills have been added to the line along with a variety of gourmet sea salts from around the world such as Fleur de Sel, Celtic Grey and Hawaiian Alaea Red Salt.
"I want the quality of the mills I make to be something an owner can be very proud of, talk about for a lifetime, and pass on to the next generation. Pepper-Passion has many repeat customers at our web-site (http://www.pepper-passion.com). I'm very proud of that."
