End of Suburbia at Greenfield Community College

The Pioneer Valley Post Carbon Council (PVPCC), an Outpost of the Post Carbon Institute, will be showing the documentary 'End of Suburbia' at Greenfield Community College on April 12, 2005, 7 pm to 9 pm, in the Stinchfield Lecture Hall. The showing is free and open to the public although donations are welcome to further the work of PVPCC. A discussion will follow the showing.

(PRWEB) April 8, 2005 -- The Pioneer Valley Post Carbon Council (PVPCC), an Outpost of the Post Carbon Institute, will be showing the documentary 'End of Suburbia' at Greenfield Community College on April 12, 2005, 7 pm to 9 pm, in the Stinchfield Lecture Hall. The showing is free and open to the public although donations are welcome to further the work of PVPCC. A discussion will follow the showing.

This powerful documentary tells the story of our addiction to oil - from the early days of the growth of suburbia to the post-war economic expansion and now, the arrival of the global, permanent peak of oil production. The film suggests that industrial civilization needs to develop a reality based approach to energy in the coming years.

Stephen Strong, an international energy expert from Harvard, MA, said, "The debate over when the last drop of oil will be extracted will never be settled and it neednt be. It is largely irrelevant. What matters...is when the world economy - now completely dependent on cheap oil and gas -- will begin to falter due to price escalation and lack of supply. By then, the window of opportunity for a manageable transition to the post-petroleum era may be largely behind us."

Strong continues, "On top of the direct uses for transportation, agriculture and industry, our region has the highest consumption of oil per capita for heating and electrical generation of any in the country. It is fair to say that our regional economy is currently tied in 'lock-step to the availability of oil and oil-derived energy."

"This region has some fabulous strengths that can help us face the coming energy shortfalls in a robust and resilient way," says Don Campbell, Chair of the Northfield Energy Committee, "if we begin to work together to think things through now. Judging from the Energy Fair in Northfield last Saturday, people are ready to act."

The Pioneer Valley Post Carbon Council is an educational and coordinating body that supports the efforts that so many are already making as well as develops action plans of its own.
