New York, NY (PRWEB) April 9, 2005 -- For the first time since it last bared all on Broadway, the Tony Award-nominated musical "The Full Monty" is back in New York City. The Gallery Players, Brooklyns premiere Off-Off Broadway theater, continues its 38th eclectic season of plays and musicals with "The Full Monty," book by Tony Award-winner Terrence McNally and music and lyrics by pop composer David Yazbek, Saturday, April 30 through Sunday, May 22, 2005.
Based on the 1997 Academy Award-nominated hit of the same name, "The Full Monty" is the story of six out-of-work and out-of-shape steel workers who find that desperate times call for desperate measures! When a male strip show is a hit with the local women, the emotionally and financially run-down factory workers figure they can cash in big time if they go the full monty.
And, yes - this time they will truly go "The Full Monty."
Though it may have been thrust in the shadows due to the overpowering glare of a certain musical called The Producers - and many argue, robbed of its Tony - "The Full Monty" has been called a slam-dunk musical sensation" (LA Times) with a phenomenal score by Yazbek that finds a charming pop lyricism in blue-collar malaise" (Ben Brantley, The New York Times, 3/4/2005). Director, Matt Schicker notes, Following the journey of the 6 'regular Joes at the center of "The Full Monty," from rock bottom to the cathartic heights and magic of music and the stage, we learn so much about whats truly important and beautiful in all of us, and how we need to not be our own worst enemies. The kinetic energy of the end of "The Full Monty," which so impressed me in the original Broadway production, will be truly roof-raising in The Gallery Players more intimate space."
Although recently, Off-Broadway theaters have stumbled upon hard times, with soaring costs and decreased funding, The Gallery Players is thriving. Located in Park Slope, Brooklyn, but beloved on both sides of the bridge, The Gallery Players have been called local heroes" by Time Out New York and past productions have brought such praise as, The Gallery Players production [of HAIR] was a sweet sense memory for this actress. The Gallery Players recreated the organic innocence, honesty, and wisdom of the original world" (Annie Golden, Broadway and film actress and star of the original Broadway "The Full Monty"), as well as I went to see The Gallery Players' production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood blithely unaware that I would soon be witnessing, in Brooklyn's Park Slope, a production that - in wit, color, vitality, musicality, inventiveness and passion - is as endearing as Drood on Broadway, in London, or anywhere around the world. I attribute this to... a theatre company whose savvy audience has found The Gallery Players to be one of New Yorks secret treasures" (author and composer Rupert Holmes).
An Equity Showcase house, The Gallery Players exciting productions and nurturing atmosphere have attracted the best actors, directors, designers, and musicians in New York. Among the well-known alumni of The Gallery Players are actor and author Harvey Fierstein (Hairspray, Torch Song Trilogy), John Rando (director of Broadways Urinetown), Diedre Goodwin (Chicago, Never Gonna Dance, Nine), Jennifer Barnhart (Avenue Q), and many other artists.
