0 to Financial Literacy in 8 Minutes

Financial literacy month encourages proactive credit card education.

(PRWEB) April 12, 2005 -- In observance of Financial Literacy Month, United College Marketing Services is promoting the use of free resources to help young adults with understanding credit's influence, avoiding interest and leveraging loopholes inherent in the credit system.

According to Larry Chiang, founder of United College Marketing Services, "Proactive credit education is most critical when it comes to avoiding credit problems". He continues by stating, "We applaud efforts to step away from reactive credit counseling that often times is too far down the river of credit woes".

"Add credit card debt along with tuition loans and living expenses pushes many students to added stress", says Robert McGrath, University Health Services director of Counseling and Consultation at University of Wisconsin. Its not unusual to find college counselors helping students deal with their debts.

In general, we get a broad assessment of all the things that are not working in a persons life," said McGrath. He said counseling would address both the emotional and the psychological aspects of overspending. We would talk about the importance of control and how to best make sound financial decisions. Generally, people have made impulsive purchases," he observed.

Having one or more credit cards has become the norm for American adults, and while in the past credit cards were used only for very large purchases, they are now used for just about anything. Chiang said anyone with a credit card should remember credit is not free money."

The trick is to use credit wisely - obviously pay your bill on time (hopefully two or three times the monthly minimum), dont spend more than you can pay off within three months and turn that credit card into a financial tool" Chiang emphasized. "Financial literacy month for United College Marketing Services means an opportunity to get on the soapbox to promote financial tool aspects of credit cards. Simple measures done monthly can boost your FICO credit score," he said. "Lower interest charges result when a credit score is boosted."

Some radical strategies have been presented such as abstinence in relation to credit cards. Along these lines, there's even an offer for "credit card condoms" at CreditCard.org (http://www.creditcard.org/freerecorders.htm)

CreditHealthy.com instituted the free Come, Grow, Go" credit program that focuses on young adults credit. Visitors can fax (877-369-5577) in their credit reports and get recommendations to boost their FICO credit score. Larry Chiang introduced the concept by saying, Come to the website, grow in your learning, go out and leverage your better score".
