Author Bonnie Haines Featured In Online Interview at TheBookInsider.com
An educator for more than twenty years, Bonnie Haines has worked with children from kindergarten through adult as a teacher, counselor and coach. Currently a School Reform Field Education Specialist, she works with the No Child Left Behind Act as mandated by President Bush and Congress. Responsible for ten South Dakota schools, located on six different Indian reservations, Bonnie is pleased to see the focus back on education. Bonnie's interest in writing Bigger Than The Box: The Effects of Labeling, stems from her experiences working as a public school counselor for 13 years. While the "sticks and stones will break my bones" theory works for some children, it is simply not enough for others. In an effort to make us all more aware of how stereotypes and labeling can be damaging, especially to our youth, Bonnie has drawn on her wealth of experience in counseling children from Kindergarten through grade 8. She has provided some surprisingly simple tools to increase our awareness, rather than pose a patented solution for a problem that is thriving in our fast-paced culture. Bonnie Haines earned her Masters degree in education from South Dakota State University. She has been recognized as the South Dakota Counseling Association West River Counselor of the Year in 1999, and received the South Dakota School Counselor of the Year in 1997. (PRWEB) April 10, 2005 -- TheBookInsider: Where did you grow up and was reading and writing a part of your life?Who were your earliest influences and why?
Bonnie L. Haines: I was born and raised in a small town in South Dakota. I am the fourth child in a family of six. There were six children in eight years so I always had siblings around. I remember my oldest sister reading all the time but I didn't develop that love until I was much older.
TheBookInsider: Why do you write?
Bonnie L. Haines: I wrote the book in hopes of making a difference in people's lives. I have experienced and worked with the effects of labeling for many years and felt I could affect more lives with a book instead of just in the small corner of the world where I lived and worked.
TheBookInsider: You have more than 20 years experience as educator. What is your background and history in the education field?
Bonnie L. Haines:I taught and coached at the high school level for five years before I worked for 13 years as a Counselor. Most of my professional career as been spent on Indian reservations, or working with Native Americans. I lived on an Indian reservation for 15 years and now work with ten schools on six of the nine Indian reservations in South Dakota. I have a Masters of Education degree in Counseling and also have post-graduate hours from a Baptist seminary.
