April 20, 11pm, Tango Takes New York at Joe's Pub with Maria Cangiano's Tango&Beyond: a Soulful Journey of the Human Condition through Tango Songs

Joe's Pub presents Maria Cangiano's Tango & Beyond: A soulful journey of the human condition through the history of tango songs, its characters and themes from the turn of the XIX century to the present. Five extraordinaire tango, jazz and classical musicians --Octavio Brunetti, Pedro Giraudo, David Hodges, Victor Prieto and Daniel Reyes-Llinas, -some of the best exponents of new tango in the United States, and dancer Mariana Parma and partner-come together to bring a new interpretation of tangos.

(PRWEB) April 11, 2005 -- The song and stories of tango will take center stage at Joes Pub, April 20th, 11pm, when Maria Cangiano presents her soulful journey of the human condition through tango. Trained as an opera singer, Maria Cangiano combines drama and singing in her interpretation of old and new Tango songs as "mini-operas" or melodramatic stories. Called by her many fans, "Anna Magnani with voice," Ms. Cangiano, originally from Argentina, has a unique voice within Argentine Tangos new generation of musicians. The depth and power of Maria Cangianos woeful, soulful voice brings the nostalgic nature of the music to life," Brooklyn Press, 2002.

Tangos rich lyric tradition will be highlighted, manifesting humankinds conflicts and yearnings from gender struggles, ethnic stereotypes, and class conflicts to the plain old heartache of love in all its forms. Tango and Beyond is a journey through the history of tango songs, its characters and themes from the turn of the XIX century to the present. Five extraordinaire tango and jazz musicians --Octavio Brunetti, Pedro Giraudo, David Hodges, Victor Prieto, and Daniel Reyes-Llinas, -some of the best exponents of new tango in the United States, and dancer Mariana Parma and partner-come together to bring a new interpretation of tangos. The program will explore the relationships between tango, classical music and jazz with visuals- designe by Maria Cangiano- featuring present and past images of Buenos Aires to enhance/counterpoint the messages of the music. Maria Cangiano and Elizabeth Eckman have designed together special customs for the show.

Initially trained in opera as a dramatic mezzo-soprano, Maria Cangiano has performed in New York Opera companies including Regina Opera Theater, Dicapo Opera Theater and the well-known Amato Opera. Two years ago, she created and produced her first one-woman tango show, Tango in Red and Black." At the same time, she put together one of the first tango bands with a vocalist in New York, El Cuarteto de Maria, Tango Quartet, with David Hodges, bandoneon, Emilio Teubal, piano and Sergio Reyes, violin. Maria Cangiano has dedicated herself to bringing Tango song repertoire to a wide diverse social and ethnical audience. She has performed with El Cuarteto and other well-known Tango musicians- Tito Castro, Pancho Navarro among others in several New York venues, such as Brooklyn 's Vertical Players Repertory, the Spanish Harlem Cultural Café Carlitos, La Tea Theater, the Nuyorican Poets Café, the National Arts Club, Cami Hall, the Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai International and so on. She is currently performing at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, the last Tuesday of every month and starting May, she will be at the Bowery Poetry Cafe monthly.
