On Friday, April 8th Empyrean Management GroupÂs CEO and President Mike Kalinsky spoke on the subject of Strategic Planning and Entrepreneurship to MBA students at Fordham UniversityÂs School of Business in Manhattan. ÂBeing asked to speak to professionals on the road to their MBAÂs is a high honor to my company and me. I never imagined five years ago when we were first getting the company up and running that all of our hard work would end up as discussion material for a college class,Â said EMG President Mike Kalinsky after the event.
Mr. KalinskyÂs presentation reviewed Empyrean Management GroupÂs growth strategies over the last five years. The speech focused on strategic planning and open communication with employees and included comments like this, Âone of the cornerstones and I might add Core Values of Empyrean Management Group is the belief that Open Communication is something that must be adhered to in every facet of an organization. Like many other small companies EMG faced adversity early on in our history. Many of the people that helped found EMG are still here because they have always had the facts in front of them to be able to make good decisions for their families. Companies that do not trust their staff with information or worse yet, think of their team members as Human Capital will not stay competitive in todayÂs workplace.Â
Kalinsky also spoke of the need for business leaders to be more accountable to their employees. ÂExecutives that use the excuse of not knowing what was going on in their business such as the people we have seen on the evening news over the last few months have lost touch with what it means to be a leader. A sense of honor or personal integrity dictates that you as the leader of an organization take responsibility for the actions of your company. Too many business leaders are there to take credit for how well their company did when revenue reports come due but immediately hide behind attorneys and denials of knowledge when things go wrong.Â
The presentation concluded with a lively Q/A between the students and Kalinsky that included the question as to how Kalinsky and EMG defined success. ÂObviously my accountant would answer that in terms of growth and profit. I prefer to answer it in this way. Our company name is defined as Ideal Place or State. During the course of the year I am constantly looking for places that our company can help live up to that ideal. In years past we have sponsored former employees walking in charity races to cure Breast Cancer, thrown parties for the children of soldiers engaged in the War in Iraq, and bought new pagers for an Ambulance squad. That Empyrean is profitable enough to share our good fortune with others to try and live up to our name is how we define success.Â
