Blessed by the Essence of Poetry

Award-winning author Aberjhani's poetry featured in consecutive issues of Essence.

Savannah (PRWEB) April 19, 2005 -- The internationally acclaimed Essence Magazine, with more than one million subscribers worldwide, currently features in back to back issues poetry by the award-winning author Aberjhani.

The April (National Poetry Month) edition of Essence contains the poem “Star People” by Aberjhani while the newly-released May edition features two more of his poems: “In a Quiet Place on a Quiet Street,” and “Botanical Gardens No. 2.” His work is presented in the April edition alongside that of Rita Dove, Jessica Care Moore, E. Ethelbert Miller, Oliver Mbamara, and Mary E. Bradix. The phenomenal diva Mariah Carey graces the cover of the April edition.

“Although I’ve had poetry published in the magazine before, I have to admit that getting published in these specific consecutive issues is a very exciting blessing for which I’m very grateful because they’re both on newsstands during National Poetry Month. I think that’s something any poet could appreciate.”

The author’s poetry appears in the special May “Collector’s Edition” once again with that of Jessica Care Moore, and that of fellow poets Tanya Tyler, Cedric Mixon, Angela Shannon, Erhiorin Urhiafe, and Jean Wilson. An all-star line-up on the cover spotlights Essence editorial director Susan L. Taylor, model Iman, comedienne Mo’Nique, actress Angela Bassett, and singers Fantasia and Alicia Keys.

The first work by the writer (along with his full-paged photograph) to appear in the magazine was a cover-story essay titled “This Mother’s Son,” published in November 1997. The magazine since then has published work from his popular title, I Made My Boy Out of Poetry, the forthcoming collection Elemental (with art by Luther E. Vann) and Visions of a Skylark Dressed in Black, for which the author is currently seeking a publisher. In addition, his Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance(with Sandra L. West) was a featured gift title in the publication’s 2003 Christmas gift guide.

In addition to his poetry in Essence, other writings by Aberjhani have been published recently in the anthology, Persistence of Dreams. Moreover, his web site, The Black Skylark Z-Ped Music Player, at http://www.authorsden.com/aberjhani, showcases the author’s short fiction, poetry, essays, excerpts from a novel in progress, and a new interview series called “Creative Conversatin’.” Special guests presented thus far in the “Creative Conversatin’” series include the jazz musician-poet Toussaint St. Negritude and Essence poetry editor Angela Kinamore.
