When faced with leaving her home of 30 years, J. Maloney was immobilized by anxiety and indecision. Yet with the spunk and fortitude of a generation that doesn’t give-up or give-in, Maloney took control. Politely but firmly she ignored the advice of her well-meaning children, bought a notebook and took charge of her life.

In this notebook she organized the big issues and small details of the move. And she jotted down solutions to problems and decisions made so she “wouldn’t forget”. When Maloney was happily settled in her new apartment, she looked at the notebook and realized she had compiled many suggestions that would help other Seniors facing a similar move.

According to The Department of Health and Human Services report, Older Americans 2000, we have a nation of Seniors about to face this experience. The report describes a “longevity revolution” as the 65-and-over population more than doubles by 2030 while enjoying an ever-increasing life expectancy.

Here are three tips from the booklet:

  • What to do with all of those framed family photos? “Remove them from their frames and resettle them in a large attractive album labeled “Classics” and use it as a coffee-table book.”
  • What to do with china, crystal and silver? “I kept all of my good china, crystal and sterling silver (I’m not dead yet!) but cut down on the serving pieces. Silver hollow ware goes with any china pattern as does plain white Corning Ware.”
  • And, perhaps, Maloney’s most important tip, “You are in control. Finally, remember these are your personal possessions and you can do what you want with them – even if it means you can hardly move around in your new home. Take your time, weed wisely and hang on to what you love most! Good luck.”

These tips and more are included in Senior Downsizing-Tips For Seniors Moving To Smaller Quarters. Anyone contemplating such a move but feeling emotionally or physically overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task will benefit from this booklet.
