Doggone Safe Helped Salem Elementary Students Become Doggie Detectives!

Doggone Safe's, Jennifer Shryock, Certified Dog Behavior Consultant presented the Be A Tree" program to each of the grades K to 5 at Salem Elementary School in Apex, NC. This program is just one of the many programs www.doggonesafe.com offers to help raise awareness and keep things safe with our canine companions. According to Cdc.gov, each year 800,000 Americans seek medical attention for dog bites; half of these are children. With this in mind Shryock, dog fan and mother of three children, believes education that is fun and effective can help raise awareness and increase safety in our community.

(PRWEB) April 22, 2005 -- Doggone Safe is a non profit organization dedicated to dog bite prevention and victim support. The Be a Tree" program is perfect for school age children and has been highly endorsed by dog behavior professionals as well as educators nationally and internationally. The program encourages children to become doggie detectives." The kids learn basic dog signals and body language from large and wonderful real-life photos. We do not bring a live dog as it is too distracting and many children have fears of dogs. Our goal is for the children to pay attention and have fun while they learn through actions, role play and games!" says Shryock.

Ask any second grade class children if anyone has ever experienced a dog bite. You will be shocked to see the number of hands that are raised. Then further the question by asking if it was their family dog or a friends dog. Most of the hands remain up as the family dog causes most of the reported dog bites. Why is this? We share our homes and include these animals in all we do, day in day out. This allows for wonderful fun times with our dogs but also may challenge tolerance at other times. Often miscommunication between people and their dog companions leads to a bite. Doggone Safe wants children and parents to learn how to communicate with their companions in a safe, respectful and fun way. We want children to be empowered by knowledge so that they can make safer choices with familiar and unfamiliar dogs.

May 16-22 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week. If your school needs materials please contact Jennifer at doggonesafeinfo@doggonesafe.com
