The recently released 12 new food pyramids have been met with great enthusiasm by weight management expert, Dr. Robert Kushner, Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University and Medical Director of Diet.com. (PRWEB) April 22, 2005 -- The recently released 12 new food pyramids have been met with great enthusiasm by weight management expert, Dr. Robert Kushner, Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University and Medical Director of Diet.com. At the same time, Dr. Kushner raises concerns that more help will most likely be needed to help the general public adapt these guidelines to their many different styles of eating.

The new government guidelines, developed with peoples ages, nutritional needs, and lifestyles in mind, offer a more individualized approach to eating and portion control. The old Food Pyramid had overlooked individual differences among the population." says Dr. Robert Kushner, author of the American Medical Association's Obesity Treatment Guide for Physicians. so its exciting to see the government beginning to recognize this and reflect it in some of their guidelines and recommendations."

However, Dr. Kushner cautions that many people might feel overwhelmed with the multiplicity of the pyramids or intimidated by seemingly challenging requirements such as having to exercise 30-90 minutes a day. According to Dr. Kushner, many people will need help finding practical ways to follow the governments guidelines."

Dr. Kushner encourages Americans to talk to their health professionals: doctors, nurse practitioners and registered dietitians about the new pyramids. More importantly, according to Dr. Kushner, one should appraise their eating, exercising, and lifestyle individually, and find ways to develop healthier habits for a gradual, but lasting, lifestyle improvement.

As Medical Director of Diet.com, Dr. Kushner offers a weight loss education program which is tailored towards each individuals lifestyle and personality traits. Each user undertakes a 70-question assessment to develop a three-dimensional eating, exercise, and coping profile. Subsequently it becomes the foundation of a personalized weight management program which teaches users to adapt healthy behaviors and habits.
