(PRWEB) April 24, 2005 -- Veritas candidate for Harlow promises to donate half his MP's salary to local charities.
The Veritas candidate for Harlow, Tony Bennett, has told voters that if they elect him to Parliament, he will donate half his Parliamentary salary each year to local charities.
In his election leaflet, distributed earlier this week to 42,000 households in the constituency, Mr Bennett, 57, wrote:
"These are my commitments to you, if elected: Aware of the struggle some people have on very low incomes, I shall draw, if elected, only half of the MP's salary of £59,095 a year- that is, £29,597, donating the rest to charity. MP's high salaries and expenses distance them from you, the voter."
Tony Bennett stood for the U.K. Independence Party in Harlow at the last General Election, where he notched up one of UKIP's best national results, netting 1,223 votes (3%. He gained a 20% share of the vote in a County Council election in Netteswell Ward last May. He was a founder member of VERITAS in February.
He believes that one reason for voters' distrust and cynicism of politics is that, once they are elected, they ' feather their own nest.' He said: "Time after time, at national and local level, they get in, and then within months vote themselves higher salaries, allowance, expenses and pensions".
