A team of amateur baseball players organized by Baseball International, with air travel arranged by Airtreks.com, departs May 1st, 2005, on the baseball road trip of the century: a ball-playing trip around the world. The barnstorming American team will play against local teams in Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Manila, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Colombo, Cairo, Rome, Nice, Paris, and London, before returning to the USA on May 24th.
The tour follows the exact route, with games in the same cities, as the never-before-duplicated 1913-1914 "Tour to End All Tours" by the New York Giants and the Chicago White Sox. To further commemorate the Giants/White Sox trip, the Baseball International team will wear replica 1913/14 uniforms of the Giants and White Sox on alternating days as they circle the globe and take on local opponents.
Airtreks.com used its leading-edge expertise in multi-stop international travel to arrange the best flights for the traveling team, covering 25,000 miles in 24 days (the 1913-1914 Giants/White Sox tour took four months) on ten different airlines.
"Baseball International threw us a curve ball with their requirements for this trip. But as specialists in around- the-world tickets, that was a pitch we knew how to hit", says Eric Freidenrich, Director of Corporate Accounts for Airtreks.com, who coordinated travel arrangements for the ballplayers and their traveling companions.
"Around-the-world" tickets from airline alliances only allow travel on certain "partner" airlines, and often require complicated connections through their hubs. Instead, Airtreks.com used its unparalleled global network of airline and supplier relationships to get discounted tickets on some of the most direct flights, and on some of the world's best airlines, for each leg of the historic baseball trip.
John Gilmore, general manager of Baseball International, praises Airtreks.com for its expertise and ability to handle the complexity of the trip: "We had the tightest possible schedule, with games on different continents on successive days. Each of the players needed to start from a different city in the USA, and one is joining the team mid-way through the trip. All of that was no problem for Airtreks.com."
Gilmore says the ability to get instant online price estimates for alternate routes with the Airtreks.com "Trip Planner" was, "a big plus over the other guys. I don't know if I'll ever try a world trip again - it's a big headache - but if I did, I'd call Airtreks.com."
