Mentoring – pairing experienced, successful individuals with newcomers – has been around since Greek mythology. The legendary Mentor was a trusted friend and guardian. In recent weeks, mentoring has been touted in a number of news reports, from New York to California citing executives from Wal-Mart to Goldman Sachs.

People attending Robert Allen Institute, training program popular real-estate investing courses, say mentoring puts them on the fast track from student to dealmaker.

Brad Tegtman, of Phoenix, AZ, said techniques he learned at a Robert Allen Institute Field Mentoring Program helped him land real-estate deals right away.

“I just made a $2-million offer on property that’s worth about $3.8 million,” said Tegtman, a 38-year-old former telecommunications worker. “I had never been in real estate. Now this is all I do, and I’m a lot happier.”

The Field Mentoring Program is not offered with all other real-estate courses and has many advantages, such as limited enrollment of about 15-20 students. During the three-day training, program mentors teach the basics of Creating Wealth with Real Estate, made famous by Allen. Mentors then help students locate potential properties, visit the sites, analyze the investments and when viable, write offers.

“We’re holding their hands,” said Gary Sturgeon, a Robert Allen Institute mentor who has been in the real-estate business in Central Florida since 1982. “So many people told us they had trouble talking on the phone and wished they could follow us around to see how we do what we do.”

The courses come from principles of Allen, a best-selling author and financial trainer, who wrote Nothing Down, which sold more than a million copies and according to Allen “helped untold thousands buy their first home or investment property…and for hundreds, perhaps even thousands, earn their first million.”

During the past 20 years, Allen has become one of the most influential financial experts in the country. He has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and The New York Times.
