The Ability to Reach All Students Imbues "No Child Left Behind" With New Meaning

An elementary school in Akron, Ohio is helping to open a door on a new way of reaching all students, making education more exciting and creating more adaptable and responsive learning environments. This week it becomes the first user of TouchSmart Publishing's TUI technology, a process that eliminates yesterday’s inability to directly and seamlessly link paper to video, internet, audio and other sources of digital content. Adoption of TUI enables creation of a totally new, technology-driven instructional model. That model makes possible significant changes in teaching practices, helps overcome learning barriers faced by disabled persons, and allows learners to make choices about how they will receive information.

Along with schools in Harlem (NY) and Gary (IN), Akron is participating in a groundbreaking instructional research project focused on improving literacy and reinforcing comprehension. The project is under the direction of Dr. Michael Mott, Assistant Professor of Literacy and Early Childhood Education at Purdue University's (Calumet) School of Education. "I'm excited to be leading the research that now has culminated in this first deployment of the touch user interface (TUI) technology allowing students to connect to digital content simply by touching printed pages in a book. This pilot should provide data regarding implementation issues for language acquisition by the emergent reading population,” says Dr. Mott. “Involving three geographical settings also should give us a better understanding of how multi-cultural and socioeconomic differences impact use of this technology."

TouchSmart Publishing, LLC is a developmental-stage company with an objective of distributing touch-sensitive wired and wireless, interactive textbooks to the educational market. It expects to be a bridge over the digital divide for more students than are currently connected, and to connect them regardless of their learning style, special needs or socioeconomic position. As a result, TouchSmart Publishing is the only complete No Child Left Behind (NCLB) solution positioned to meet the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS).
