Comprehensive Scientific Literature Review Concerning the Current Evidence Base for Minimal Intervention Dentistry (MI)

A comprehensive scientific literature review concerning Minimal Intervention Dentistry (MI) by three dental schools in Brasilia, Johannesburg and Sao Paulo will provide an evidence base for MI and aims to assist in the development of evidence based undergraduate MI courses for dental students in the near future.

(PRWEB) May 7, 2005 -- Dental academics and practitioners from three dental schools in Brasilia, Johannesburg and Sao Paulo have joined hands in order to search fifteen main databases (including Cochrane Library, PubMed, Lilacs) and to review English, German, Portuguese and Spanish articles relevant to over 50 individual MI concepts. The review will follow evidence-based principles and, once completed, will be presented in form of the 'MI Compendium available in hard copy and on CD-ROM.

Under the title 'Minimal Intervention: A new approach in Dentistry -
Evidence based Compendium, the MI Compendium will provide a comprehensive evidence base for MI and aims to assist in the development of an evidence based undergraduate MI course for dental students.

During the scientific review process, collaborating academics will present review results to individual MI concepts in congresses and symposia.

Since scientific research and developments in dentistry are ongoing, the MI Compendium will be regularly updated and extended. Information on updates will be made available online.

MI is a philosophy of professional care, concerned with the first-occurrence, earliest detection and earliest possible treatment of disease on micro (molecular) levels, followed by the most minimal invasive and patient friendly options to repair irreversible damages caused by such disease. MI aims to empower patients (through information, skills and motivation) to be in charge of their own oral health, so that they only require minimal intervention from the dental profession.
