Malaysia: MSC Company to Address IT Graduates Mismatch with On-Lamp.Com

Newspaper reports talk of up to 10,000 Malaysian IT graduates who cannot find employment in their chosen field; programmers advertise their services but employers want something different. AML Net Sdn Bhd is doing something about it by running an affordable summer school to convert IT graduates who have training in proprietary software to Linux, Apache, MySQL and PhP - the skills that employers find it especially hard to find.

(PRWEB) May 7, 2005 -- AML Net Sdn Bhd is taking steps to address the mismatch between employers and IT graduates by running a low-cost summer school to provide those trained on proprietary software to migrate to Open Source programming based on LAMP (Linux / Apache / MySQL / PhP.

According to some newspaper reports there are as many as 10,000 IT graduates who are either unemployed or are not employed in their career of choice. Yet we see many advertisements by programmers seeking work and by many employers seeking programmers. These advertisements starkly remind us that the job-seekers are trained on proprietary software such as Microsoft but the commercial world, including government and state owned enterprises, are seeking programmers with competence in LAMP," said Nigel Morris-Cotterill, Director of AML Net Sdn Bhd.

The nett result is that companies are unable to recruit Malaysians and are importing programmers from, for example, India. AML Net Sdn Bhd has been forced to send some of its own development offshore. Bizarrely, we sent it to California, where the shakeup in the software industry has left experienced programmers with nothing to do," said Morris-Cotterill.

AML Net believes that the issue is a matter of strategic national importance because it feeds directly into Malaysias competitiveness in the international software and internet development business.

AML Nets summer school will run in Kuala Lumpur for the month of August. It will take only 60 trainees. Its not many, but we have to start somewhere," says Morris-Cotterill.

The training will be conducted by Canadian Jeff Kolesnikowicz, who as the owner of both a programming and internet hosting company is particularly well qualified to develop the course.

The course will cost RM6,500 for a full months course. Trainees will be allocated to either morning or afternoon sessions with assignments to complete out of class and in addition to programming there will be two half day sessions on legal issues relating to Open Source Software including code-theft, licensing and so on. There are providers offering two-day courses for around RM2500 dealing with the basics of, say, setting up a Linux server. This course goes so much further, and gives exceptional value for money," said Kolesnikowicz. AML Net have set out to do something very special and Im very proud to be associated with this initiative which, we hope, will be the first of many such programmes to help programmers widen their skill set and to help employers to reduce their software costs."

The Linux operating system has come a long way from geek beginnings. It is now highly useable - and very stable - on desktop machines. And its hit the mainstream with many major corporations in the US and Europe running mission critical software on Linux equipped boxes. And just last week, Chinas biggest bank announced that it was dumping other software in favour of Linux because of the cost advantages.

Applications for the course close at the end of May 2005, with successful applicants being notified a week later and being required to pay the course fee by the middle of June to secure their place.
