(PRWEB) May 8, 2005 -- In June of this year a remarkable event, sponsored by Jeep - DaimlerChrysler, will take place. Postponed from 2004 due to the strict security surrounding the 60th anniversary D-Day commemorations, a gathering of the veterans of Easy Company, 506th Regiment, US 101st Airborne Division -- the Band of Brothers immortalized in Tom Hanks and Steven Spielbergs epic television series - has been arranged.
29 veterans, together with members of their families, are being brought to Europe again, many of them for the first time since 1944. They will be feted, rightly, as liberators. They will visit the sites where their fame was won and where many of their comrades fell. There will be joy and sorrow and much remembering.
The party will begin their tour housed in splendour at the magnificent Chateau de LIsle-Marie, just outside Ste. Mere-Eglise in Normandy -- the first town liberated.
A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the American cemetery at Colleville, above Omaha Beach, on June 4th and a commemorative Airborne Division parachute drop will take place over the field beside the 'Iron Mike memorial at La Fiere, on the afternoon of June 5th.
After D-Day, June 6th, the party will move on to Bastogne, where the infamous Battle of the Bulge took place, for a sequence of events including the official opening of the Easy Company monument at Foy, on June 10th.
From June 13th to June 16th, the veterans will travel to The Netherlands, site of Operation Market Garden - perhaps the greatest airborne assault in military history - where they will attend to unveiling of another monument to them on June 15th.
At their request, Cast & Crew from the Band of Brothers series will join the veterans for parts of their tour. The contribution made by this series to the awareness of the sacrifice involved in the liberation of Europe, particularly among the young, is greatly appreciated by those who took part in it.
This event is an opportunity for those who have known nothing but liberty to show their appreciation to those who, at great cost -- the greatest cost -- won it for them.
