A "Mystery Shopper" or "Secret Shopper" is someone who is hired by an establishment to pose as a customer and secretly report back to the owner how the service was, or other details that are requested. The person is then paid for the assignment and sometimes gets reimbursed for their purchase, meal or other things.

Establishments include but are not limited to: Department stores such as Target, Wal-Mart, Gap and Radio Shack. Restaurants such as Taco Bell, Jack-In-The-Box, McDonald's and Olive Garden. Fun parks such as Six Flags and Disney World, and Carnival Cruise Ship lines.

Here's a story from a mother who work as a mystery shopper:

"As a mother to four children I consider myself a 'professional shopper'. When a friend and I were talking years ago - she mentioned a 'really FAB thing' she was going to try during her summer months from college - Mystery Shopping.

After a few months - I got sick of hearing about all the perks she had received. Free hotel stays, free microwave, free shoes, free GAS - CASH ~ geeze - you name it. I wanted in.

Thus started my quest to become a Mystery Shopper. Realize that each of these companies can represent from one to over fifty different corporations. Big name restaurants, banks, posh hotels, anything & everything in your local Mall, name brand fast food companies, big ticket SUV dealerships - you name it - they need it shopped.

I have made anywhere from $10 for 30 minutes of my time - to $90.00 for an hour. It depends on the shop. I have stayed at 5 star hotels, driven Humvee's and gotten paid for it, taken my entire family out to a 5 star restaurant ~ they picked up the tab and I got paid for it. I have been able to get my children free toys & books, gotten free cable service, free clothes and so much more.

We have even taken our extended family to the movies and not only did we all watch the movie for free, get free drinks and popcorn - they paid me.

Being a mystery shopper has been wonderful. I have been able to pick and choose the jobs I want and as a mother I have loved being my own independent contractor and in charge of who I want to shop, and where I want to shop.

Last year I made over $6000.00 in cash and gifts - part time by being a Mystery Shopper."
