Oakland, CA (PRWEB) May 16, 2005
Following its successful, exclusive exhibition at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, the Joyce Gordon Gallery is pleased to host Amanda Williams, nationally acclaimed artist, Bay Area architect, and the 2004 winner of the prestigious Hennessy/Schiefflin & Sommerset Emerging Artist award. Under the mantra Âusing my paintings to tell your storiesÂ, her newest body of work, ÂDays. Paint. YearsÂ, masterfully weaves together stories of our shared memories and emotions into vibrant works of mixed media art. The opening reception will take place from 5:30 to 9:00 pm on Thursday, June 9, 2005. The exhibit will run from June 9 until July 2, 2005.
Williams, a Chicago native residing in the Bay Area since 1997, is one of the most talented young artists on the national and Bay Area art scene. With a BA in Architecture from Cornell University, this former Ford/Mellon Research Fellow has taken her passion for painting to extraordinary heights. In addition to the Emerging Artist Award, she was one of the artists chosen by the Studio Museum in Harlem to participate in the highly acclaimed 2004 exhibit ÂHarlem World: Metropolis as Metaphor. Williams has also exhibited in top museums in the country including the Wilmer Jennings Gallery in New York and the Southshore Cultural Center Art Gallery in Chicago. She was also selected in 2001 as a Robert J. Eidlitz Fellow to photograph in Ethiopia.
In her newest exhibit, ÂDays. Paint. YearsÂ, Williams masterfully incorporates mementos from family, friends and strangers into her signature photo transfer collages on oil painted canvases and wood. Themes of love, fear, loss and forgiveness are explored as the emotions and reminiscences behind which everyone has a story. Williams painting process is similar to the compilation of memories and events that make up the story of our lives. Of this body of work, Williams states, ÂThe days paint the years. It is a layering of moments, memories, colors and sounds precise in meaning, but almost never accurate.Â
