Support for UN Parliament Grows / Committee Welcomes Resolution of the Liberal International in Sofia

Berlin, (PRWEB) May 15, 2005 -- By adopting a resolution on Saturday morning in Sofia, the 53rd Congress of the Liberal International (LI) has backed the proposal to establish a Parliamentary Assembly at the United Nations. According to the resolution of the world federation of liberal political parties such an assembly would make the UN more democratic, more transparent and would bring it in better touch to the people. Thereby efficiency and acceptance of the UN could be enhanced. The LI has more than 50 national member parties.

The resolution of the LI Congress has been welcomed by the non-partisan Committee for a Democratic UN" (KDUN) as important support for the reform proposal. This is a further sign that the proposal meets with support, no matter in which political camp" said KDUN chairman Andreas Bummel. In October 2003 the Socialist International has backed the proposal in São Paulo. The establishment of a UN Parliament is one of the main aims of the Committee for a Democratic UN which was founded in February 2004.

"Unfortunately the debate on UN reform centers too much on the question how the UN Security Council could be reformed. In our opinion the establishment of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly also has to be put onto the agenda. The resolution of the Liberal International contributes to this", said Bummel.

The resolution calls on the member states of the UN to enter into deliberations on the establishment of a Parliamentary Assembly at the United Nations". We hope that governments who include liberal parties will take this call to heart", said Bummel. In Canada and Belgium for example liberal prime ministers are in office, Paul Martin and Guy Verhofstadt.
