Kissimmee Utility Authority, Florida's sixth largest community-owned electric utility, has been named one of Central Florida's best places to work.
The finalists were selected based on the results of online confidential surveys completed by employees of dozens of nominated companies throughout the region.
Conducted by the Orlando Business Journal in partnership with Wichita, Kan.-based QMR Market Research, the "Best Places to Work 2005" survey covered the following areas: team effectiveness, retention risk, alignment with goals, trust with co-workers, individual contribution, manager effectiveness, trust in senior leaders, feeling valued, work engagement and people practices.
Company employees received an access code allowing them to take an online survey created by QMR. Fifty percent of KUA employees had to participate in the survey in order for the utility to receive a score and be eligible for ranking.
QMR gathered the data and used a proprietary formula to rank companies based solely on the employee feedback. Companies were ranked in four categories based on the number of employees: small, 10-50 employees; medium, 51-150 employees; large, 151-300 employees; and giant, more than 301 employees.
In order for a company to make the Best Places to Work 2005 list, it had to receive a score of 80 or higher. KUA ranked fifth overall in the large company category with a score of 85.16. Maitland-based Welbro Building Corp. ranked highest in the large company category with a score of 90.53.
It's a company's efforts to engage its employees that sets the best places to work apart from the rest of the pack, said Alan Goodnight, president of QMR.
"Employee engagement means employees feel that what they do from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. contributes to the success of the organization," explained Goodnight. "Once they know this, it makes them feel better valued, more important, like everyone is rowing the ship in the right direction."
Honorees were recognized in a special section published in the Orlando Business Journal on May 13.
KUA was the only utility and the only government employer recognized in the regional competition.
