AlzheimerÂs is personal to Owens. As his grandmother suffers from the mind-crippling disease, Owens experiences first hand the impact it has on family members and caregivers. ÂIt has taken a toll on my mother. She takes care of my grandmother and gives me updates constantly, states Owens. ÂItÂs very emotional. The thought of my grandmother not remembering me, her body continuing to suffer, and at some point it has to come to an end, adds Owens, who makes frequent visits to see his grandmother in Alabama.
Owens commitment extends beyond lending his name to the cause. Owens testified before a U.S. Senate subcommittee to support the Alzheimer's Association's "Billion Dollar a Year" campaign in April 2003, served as Celebrity Team Chair for the Alzheimer's Association's national fundraiser, Memory Walks in 2002 & 2003, and designated a $25,000 contribution from Sharpie, Inc. to the Alzheimer's Association in 2002.
The Terrell Owens Foundation, Inc. exists to assist the national and certain local AlzheimerÂs Associations throughout the United States in raising the awareness of AlzheimerÂs disease, including the risk factors, warning signs, treatments and statistics. The goal of The Terrell Owens Foundation, Inc. is to distribute a minimum $50,000 worth of grants and donations to deserving grassroots charitable organizations.
