Andy Butler's non-fiction book "New House 5: How a dorm becomes a home" was inspired by his experience Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. The book depicts a year in the life of several freshmen students who live in the same dormitory.

College students aren’t just about alcohol and sex anymore. A lot has changed in the last twenty years, and college students in the modern era face much different issues and challenges than students from previous generations. In his new book “New House 5: How a dorm becomes a home,” author Andy Butler tries to show what some of those problems are, where they stem from, and how students deal with them.

Butler is a student at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. His book is based on his experience as a resident assistant in a dorm for first-year students. As a resident assistant, it was Butler’s job to oversee 56 freshmen and serve as a peer mentor and crisis responder. His book spans one full academic year and follows several students through the different issues they faced. Butler hopes his story can educate people about what it’s like for the “millennial” generation to live in a college dormitory at a prestigious university. He also hopes it inspires people by showing how the students who lived in his dormitory formed a caring and open community.

New House 5 is targeted at college-aged young adults, parents who have children in college, and anyone who wants to learn more about what it’s like for a 21st century college student to live in a dormitory. According to Butler, “Everything that happened in this book is in the past; my hope is that the reader can learn from our mistakes as we are still learning from them now. I think it’s an important and enjoyable book told from the perspective of someone who has first hand experience.”

More information is available at the book’s official website, http://www.newhouse5.com. The book, published by PublishAmerica, is currently available to order on the internet at most book retailers such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
