According to Perfect Madness: Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety Âdesperate housewives says it all - American mothers are running flat out on a treadmill of misery-inducing over-parenting. TheyÂve lost the ability to enjoy work and family and theyÂve lost that spark of wow in their lives. In trying to have it all, they lose it all. Moms lives are in desperate need of some makeover magic.
Author of Perfect Madness, Judith Warner, suggests that a Âwidespread, choking cocktail of guilt and anxiety, resentment and regret is Âpoisoning motherhood for American women today. Her book is getting a lot of media attention, but does the message ring true for American Moms?
Not according to the Motherhood Project study from the Institute for American Values. Most American women like being mothers, says this study. One in five Moms does feel stressed by parenting issues, but no mention of guilt and anxiety, resentment or regret.
ÂThe Motherhood Project findings are much closer to reality, agrees Eve Michaels, originator of the Makeover Magic for Moms program who works with women of all ages. ÂMoms do feel they have lost their sense of wow many moms are pressures in their daily lives. But they most certainly can have it all and they deserve to have it all. However, in order to enjoy it all and be free of the guilt and anxiety, they have to learn to balance their lives.Â
