Nubian Sistas Book Club, Inc., will kick-off the first installment of the “Reading is a Pleasure, Literary Series” featuring local and self-published authors who will read excerpts from their books and conduct book signings on Saturday, June 18, 2005 from 6 to 9 pm. Held at the Literary Café, 12325 N.E. 6th Ave, in North Miami, the series was especially created for local authors who haven’t had the opportunity to become known by a large audience. “These authors need a chance for their voices to be heard,” says Joy Farrington, President of Nubian Sistas Book Club, Inc. and Event Coordinator of the literary series. “We have an abundance of talent right here in our own backyard that no one knows about. Through this venue, we hope to rectify that.”

The first author featured in the series is Trista Russell, author of “Going Broke” and the upcoming “Fly On The Wall”. After much encouragement from family and friends to submit her manuscript to different publishing companies, Russell was signed to a two-book deal with Urban Books, a subsidiary of Kensington Books. “The funny story behind the creation of “Going Broke” is that Trista started writing the book to help pass the time away while she was at work. I don’t think I was supposed to mention that though,” Joy laughs.

Created from a desire to showcase the variety of literary talent located in South Florida, Ms. Farrington states, “Reading is not a ‘tiresome task’, and I intend to prove that. Some people, especially college students, view reading as a chore. I want to show them how fun and relaxing reading a great novel can be.”

A “Warm Spirit” representative will also be on hand to give free hand massages and samples from their line of products, and will be available to take orders from those interested in purchasing some of the items on display. Although this event is free and open to the public, due to limited space, an RSVP is highly recommended.

In the future, Nubian Sistas Book Club, Inc. plans to continue to pursue their dream to make South Florida the new Mecca for the Literary Arts by continuing to promote authors in the area. “I believe that if everyone supports events like these, we will put Miami on the literary map.”
