As "Outfoxed" director Robert Greenwald completes his sure-to-be controversial film about Wal-Mart, The Disinformation Company announces today a companion book, also entitled "WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price," to be published simultaneously with the film's Fall 2005 release. Today's announcement comes on the same date as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.'s Annual Meeting, and two days after the New York Times broke the story about Greenwald's film-in-progress.
Greg Spotts, director of the acclaimed documentary "American Jobs" and author of "CAFTA and Free Trade: What Every American Should Know," is writing the book with complete access to Greenwald's unique filmmaking process. The book will explore the innovative "digital muckrakers" of Greenwald's investigative team, and chronicle the parallel endeavors of his political staff as they assemble the large-scale grassroots campaign that will accompany the film's release. Building on the nontraditional distribution for Greenwald's previous documentaries, the Wal-Mart film will be publicized and distributed by dozens of organizations in addition to its commercial availability on DVD.
According to Spotts, "Robert Greenwald and his talented young staff are reinventing documentary film and creating a template for the video-activists of the future. The book will give readers an all-access pass to the ideas, innovations, trials and tribulations of Robert and his crew."
In announcing his new film earlier this week, Greenwald said, "This is a movie about American families and American ideals, a movie about one corporation crushing the American dream for millions of ordinary people Â right or left, Republican or Democrat, red or blue. Wal-Mart is systematically destroying the fabric of our nation, pretending to be the great American workplace while at the same time showing thinly veiled contempt for working families, small business owners, and the very people it employs."
The Wal-Mart book is one of a series of collaborations between The Disinformation Company and Robert Greenwald, including the DVD of "OUTFOXED" and the companion book authored by Alexandra Kitty. The Wal-Mart book will be the third collaboration between Disinformation and Author/Filmmaker Greg Spotts, whose "American Jobs" DVD and "CAFTA and Free Trade" book are both available through Disinformation.
Greenwald's upcoming film about Wal-Mart takes the viewer on a deeply personal journey into the everyday lives of families struggling to fight against a goliath. From a family business owner in the Midwest to a preacher in California, from workers in Florida to a poet in Mexico, the film will explore a wide range of stories as filmed by Greenwald's multiple globe-trotting crews. In addition, current and former employees, managers and executives will divulge the corporation's inner-workings.
"Hundreds of current and former Wal-Mart employees and executives have already come forward to tell their stories, and we expect thousands more will do so in the near future," Greenwald said.
