Massive Download of the English Demo Version of the Euratlas Historical Atlas of Europe by Chinese Surfers

From Feb. 15, 2005 through the end of May 2005, Chinese host servers, Netvigator.com, have been massively downloading, to a level of more than 180 GB, the Basic and Expert demo version of the Euratlas Periodical Historical Atlas of Europe, weighting nearly 30 MB each, from Euratlas servers, hosted by Infomaniak Network S.A., Geneva, Switzerland.

Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland (PRWEB) June 6, 2005 -- Euratlas Nussli, a privately owned business specializing in historical digital cartography and launched in September 2004 offers on its websites www.euratlas.net and www.euratlas.com detailed sequenced maps showing the history of Europe as whole. The aim of the Euratlas Historical Atlas is to provide a comprehensive view of European history through 21 minimaps, one per century, from year 1 to year 2000.

These historical maps are independent of any national views and positions and have as their purpose to describe the configuration of the European countries at fixed intervals. Here, the course of history is treated with the optics of an external observer, like a scene in slow motion showing the growth of a plant. By showing only the sequence of births, growths and disappearances of states, the Euratlas Historical Atlas of Europe is not only an alternative to the historical account, but also an objective instrument of independent research liberated from internal or nationalistic views.

The Euratlas Historical Atlas of Europe project covers the European area in a broad sense that is from the Sahara to Aland Islands and from the Atlantic Ocean to the Caspian Sea. It describes the political evolution of this whole cultural area rather than simply the surface area of a modern state. Notions such as "A Historical Atlas of France or of the United Kingdom", for instance, are unrelated to this plan since one of its goals is precisely to show that political units are changing and relate to a view focused on the present. A 100 year interval for each map of Europe makes it possible to have a synthetic vision of the last two millennia.

The Euratlas Historical Atlas of Europe exists in 3 versions:
- Web-version,
- Basic version for all operating systems
- Expert version only for Windows.

All details and demos are available at http://www.euratlas.com/demo.htm. Although these maps of Europe and demos are provided only in English or French, their consistent structure and light colors make it possible for everyone, even for persons unaware of Western languages, to easily capture European history from year 1 to year 2000. It is for this reason that since February 2005, Chinese surfers have been regularly downloading the demo versions of the European historical atlas, especially the basic one.

China is a huge country, and even if only a tiny percentage of its population are interested in European history, this induces an exceptionally broad traffic on any Western medium web-server. However the interest of Chinese scholars in European history is worth being noticed.
