The Web was humming this week with Microsoft's announcement that Office 12 documents will be XML-based. This follows on the heels of many Web-based platforms such as those provided by Google, Yahoo, Amazon and eBay, which are increasingly adopting XML as their preferred data exchange format. Chaparral Software, publisher of the popular EZxslt and Brushfire applications for FileMaker developers, is bringing their "Practical XML for FileMaker Pro Developers" seminar to Scottsdale, Ariz. this summer, in conjunction with the annual FileMaker Pro developers' conference.
Russell Kohn, president of Chaparral Software, thinks more developers should climb the XML/XSLT learning curve.
"Look around: XML is here to stay," says Kohn. "FileMaker Pro developers need to cope with this new reality. The combination of the new generation of FileMaker product offerings with the maturation of XML-related Web services truly allow FileMaker developers unprecedented opportunity to deliver value to their customers and user constituencies. This seminar will focus on how to use XML with FileMaker's built-in XML/XSLT processing capabilities in the real world - on the desktop and the Web."
The seminar will feature lecture style presentations, demonstrations, handsÂon experience and opportunities for discussion and questions. From a quick explanation of what XML is, how it works and why it's shaking the data management world to its foundations, to explaining how FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Server Advanced handle XML, to reviews of XSLT editors, this course is designed for FileMaker Pro developers with a strong emphasis on real-world issues and techniques.
The seminar will be offered just before and after the annual FileMaker Developer's Conference in Scottsdale, Ariz., Aug. 26 - 27 and Sept. 1 Â 2. Registration is now open with a tuition fee of $1,199. FileMaker Solutions Alliance members get a $200 discount if they register before June 30 (enter "FSA" in the discount code field). Visit http://www.chapsoft.com/events.html to register.
No prior exposure to XML is assumed or required for this seminar. Intermediate level FileMaker Pro development experience is a prerequisite for the seminar, and experience with HTML is suggested.

For the keynote address at DevCon 2004, at the invitation of FileMaker, Inc., Kohn prepared the materials demonstrating FileMaker's use of XML on the Web and also for integration with MS Office, combining the use of Instant Web Publishing and Custom Web Publishing techniques.
