PhatWare Announces CalliGrapher 8.0 Beta Availability

Upgrade of Award-Winning Handwriting Recognition Software for Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs Features Support for Windows Mobile 5.0 and New Data Input Method

Mountain View, CA (MobilityNewswire/PRWEB ) June 9, 2005 -- PhatWare Corporation, a leading provider of software products and professional services for mobile and desktop computers, announces today the beta availability of CalliGrapher 8.0, the next generation of the company's award-winning handwriting recognition software. CalliGrapher 8.0 is available immediately to consumers for Beta testing, and PhatWare welcomes user participation and feedback.

CalliGrapher, one of the most popular Pocket PC handwriting recognition applications on the market, analyzes pen strokes written in any application window, then converts those pen strokes into text and sends the recognized text to the target application. Employing advanced fuzzy logic and neural net techniques, CalliGrapher recognizes arbitrary alphanumeric strings as well as words contained in its integrated dictionary.

CalliGrapher 8.0 supports the new Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 software platform, which Microsoft released earlier this year. CalliGrapher 8.0 includes two input methods: Write Pad," a new method of entering handwritten data, and existing Write Anywhere." Write Pad is a specified writing pad" area at the bottom of the screen where users can enter handwritten information that will be instantly recognized and converted to the digital text. Write Pad gives users an option other than CalliGraphers current Write Anywhere" feature that allows users to enter handwritten information anywhere on the screen. Users can now choose to enter data either on the entire screen with Write Anywhere or in a designated area with Write Pad.

Additional feature improvements include improved handwriting recognition, attachable and floating keyboard, extended CalliGrapher toolbar and Write Pad that occupies the entire width of the screen in landscape mode, new color picker to select ink and pad colors, and much more. A complete list of new features can be found on the CalliGrapher 8.0 Beta Web Site, www.calligrapher.net.

We are pleased to unveil CalliGrapher 8.0 for Beta testing as user feedback is a key component to the developments we make," said PhatWare President Stan Miasnikov. CalliGrapher 8.0 will keep PhatWare on the cutting edge supporting Microsoft technology and we look forward to the testers response."

In addition to its cursive, print or mixed handwriting recognition, CalliGrapher offers PenCommander, an easy-to-use PC navigation tool; ink color selection and customizable ink width; and a "Quick Correct" window for fast correction as the user writes. In addition to English handwriting support, CalliGrapher offers language pack offerings for 11 foreign languages and Medical Pack, a 130,000-word professional-strength English language medical dictionary.

We are pleased the upgrade to CalliGrapher 8.0 will not only support the Windows Mobile 5.0 software platform, but our previous version as well," said Chris Hill, group product manager of the Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. The upgrades and improvements to CalliGrapher will go hand-in-hand with the Windows Mobile 5.0 features that enable increased productivity and a broader range of customer experiences supported by Windows Mobile-based devices."

CalliGrapher 8.0 supports devices running on Windows Mobile 2003 or later software. To participate in the CalliGrapher 8.0 Beta Program, visit www.calligrapher.net and follow the instructions on the Web site. The final release of CalliGrapher 8.0 is expected in Q3 2005.
