San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 11, 2005 -- Lane Nemeth, founder of Petlane (www.petlane.com), urges pet owners to understand how to care for their companion animals during the dog days of summer. Too many accidents occur during times of high heat, and extreme conditions can even cause fatalities. As "America's number one companion animal advocate," Nemeth puts forth the following TIPs for protecting pets:
Fact: Dogs and cats have sweat glands on their noses and the pads of the feet Oonly, and are very vulnerable to heat.
Use the following methods for keeping your dogs and cats hydrated:
- Take along plenty of water wherever you go. Your companion animals cant tell you when theyre thirsty!
- At home, have several water sources available to them so theyre encouraged to drink often.
- Limit outdoor exercise during the hottest times of day.
Prevent Heatstroke by:
- Keeping your furry friends hydrated.
- Making sure shade is available at all times.
- Never leave companion animals in your car on a warm day, even with the windows cracked. The temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes on an 85 degree day. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. At 110 degrees, pets are in danger of heatstroke (www.hsus.org).
Signs of Heatstroke:
- Rapid panting or difficult breathing
- Rolling eyes
- A staggering gate
- Lying prone
- Elevated body temperature (normal for dogs is 100.2˚ -- 102.8˚; normal for cats is 100.5˚ - 102.5˚)
First Aid:
- Get your companion animal out of direct heat and take his temperature.
- Spray him with cool water, then recheck his temperature.
- Place cool, water-soaked towels around his neck, on his abdomen or back.
- Transport your pet to the nearest veterinary hospital to check for complications.
